MATT THE CAT AND THE JUKE IN THE BACK SHOW WITH PT. III
THE FLAMINGOS FROM 1954 TO 1956.  ON ROCK-IT RADIO #5049

The Flamingos, Pt. 3 1957-59

Terry Johnson of The Flamingos joins Matt The Cat
this week as the Juke In The Back jumps and grooves with
part three of our three part feature on The Flamingos,
one of the most influential and best remembered vocal groups
of the 1950s. In part three, we'll dig on both sides of all
The Flamingos single releases for the Decca and End labels
covering 1957-59. With the additions of guitarist, arranger
and vocalist Terry Johnson and vocalist Tommy Hunt in 1957,
The Flamingos music takes on a heavy pop influence.
Decca doesn't provide much promotion, so their 3 original
Decca releases flop. Once on George Goldner's End Label,
their fortunes turn as Lovers Never Say Goodbye hit the
chart at the beginning of 1959. They quickly follow it
up with the smash standard, 'I Only Have Eyes For You,'
which crosses over to the Pop Chart. Terry Johnson tells
Matt The Cat the story behind those hits as well as how he
came to join the group. He's still performing as The Flamingos
today.
Don't miss the final chapter of The Flamingos on this week's
Juke In The Back.

1. Swanee River Boogie - Albert Ammons â€" Mercury 1947
2. Interview with Terry Johnson on The Song Ladder of Love
3. The Ladder of Love -- The Flamingos Decca 1957
4. Let's Make Up - The Flamingos â€" Decca 1957
5. Helpless - The Flamingos â€" Decca 1957
6. My Faith In You - The Flamingos â€" Decca 1957
7. Where Mary Go - The Flamingos â€" Decca 1958
8. The Rock and Roll March - The Flamingos â€" Decca 1958
9. Interview with Terry Johnson on Lovers never say goodbye
10. Lovers Never Say Goodbye - The Flamingos â€" End 1958
11. That Love Is You - The Flamingos â€" End 1958
12. But Not For Me - The Flamingos â€" End 1959
13. I Shed A Tear At Your Wedding - The Flamingos â€" End 1959
14. GREAT 78** At The Prom - The Flamingos â€" End 1959
15. Love Walked In - The Flamingos â€" End 1959
16. Interview with Terry Johnson on I Only have eyes for you
17. I Only Have Eyes For You - The Flamingos  â€" End 1959
18. Goodnight Sweetheart - The Flamingos â€" End 1959
19. After Hours - Erskine Hawkins â€" Bluebird 1946

Great show on some early Doo Wop Matt and the Flamingos.

LONG TIME ROCK-IT RADIO LISTENER AND OLDIES FAN
NEEDS HELP!

Here's the info for Jennie Soto that we talked about.
She's a listener of Rock-it Radio. She's been into
Rockabilly and Doo Wop music since she was a Teenager.
Now at age 42, she's suffered a stroke and has no
health insurance. She's also the single Mom with a
6 year old daughter.
If anyone wants to plug this on their show,
I'm sure she'd apreciate it.

As you may know Jennie Soto Gargiulo has recently
suffered from a major stroke and she has no health
insurance. This fund has been set up to help cover
some of her medical bills and expenses while she is
in the hospital. No amount is too little.
So if you can help please make a donation.
Thank you. Good Guy Glenn

REMEMBERING OFFSHORE PIRATE RADIO IN THE
UNITED KINGDOM
IN THE 60S.

You can pretty safely debate that offshore pirate radio
brought Rock and Roll to Great Britain in the 60s.  Prior
to that, The only radio outlet in the UK was the BBC.  And
only had a few hours a week of programming dedicated to the
music the British youth were yearning for.  So, along came
Offshore broadcasting.  Basically refitted cargo ships into
a floating radio station - anchored just off the coast in
International waters.  Probably the most famous  being
Radio Caroline (named after Caroline Kennedy (JFK's daughter)).
These stations played the Rock and Roll of the day.
Rock-it Radio has a website dedicated to the Offshore Radio
days at:
http://www.rockitradio.net/pirate.html

Come tune into  the World on your computer!

1000s of stations around the world now broadcast online.  We have a
link to some of the internet top directories to help you find these stations.

Rock-it Radio Program Webpage Reminder

Remember, if the show that you want to hear is getting close to the bottom
of the list of radio shows, you should tune in as soon as you can. These shows
to have a high audio quality require a lot of internet bandwidth and memory.
And currently we can only afford the
30
latest shows online here at Rock-it Radio.

So, when a new show is put online it knocks the oldest one off the Rock-it Radio
archives page.  Usually a show will at least last 16 to 20 days, once it is placed in
the archives.

OUR SISTER STATION FIRST NATIONS BROADCASTING.

We invite you to also check out our sister station -- First Nations
Broadcasting. And tune into the rather Cool North of the Yukon and Alaska
with our very own Debbie Snowdove!

============================================
Well that is just about it for this newsletter and playlists of our latest
shows. We hope that you enjoy them.
We will do our best to keep these shows on for at least 14
days and hopefully 21 days.
All the best always,
Bennie Dingo
