MATT THE CAT AND THE JUKE IN THE BACK WITH A TRIBUTE
TO MEMPHIS SLIM ON SHOW #4991

Memphis Slim dubbed himself the Ambassador Of The Blues
and for good reason. He spread the gospel of America's music
around the world during his almost 50 year career. This week,
Matt the Cat and the Juke in the Back show takes a look at Slim's
prodigious contribution to the genre. He began recording as
Pete Chatman (his real name is John Chatman) in 1940 and by
the end of the year was already known as Memphis Slim, a name
given to him by a producer at Bluebird Records. His prolific
career really took off after WWII, when he cut some incredible
sides for Miracle Records, a little Chicago independent label.
He scored a #1 R&B hit in 1948 with 'Messin' Around, which is
seldom heard or celebrated today. He would enter the R&B lists
four more times during the late 1940s and twice in the early '50s
for the Premium and United Labels. Even though the US Senate
honored Memphis Slim in the early 70s with an Ambassador of
Good Will title, he is hardly recognized today for his important
contribution to Blues, Rhythm & Blues and early Rock n Roll.
Get the story behind the story of Memphis Slim on this week's
Juke In The Back.

1. Swanee River Boogie - Albert Ammons â€" Mercury 1947
2. Diggin' My Potatoes No. 2 - Peter Chatman & His Washboard Band â€" Okeh 1940
3. Beer Drinking Woman - Memphis Slim â€" Bluebird 1940
4. Rockin' The House - Memphis Slim â€" Miracle 1947

10. Angel Child - Memphis Slim & The House Rockers â€" Miracle 1949
11. Really Got The Blues - Memphis Slim & The House Rockersâ€" Premium 1950
12. Havin' Fun - Memphis Slim & The House Rockers â€" Premium 1950
13. GREAT 78 - Kilroy Has Been Here â€" Memphis Slim & The House Rockers â€" Miracle 1947

DAILY TELEGRAPH NEWSPAPER OF LONDON GIVES ROCK-IT
RADIO #1 RATING FOR OLDIES RADIO STATIONS ONLINE!
A couple of days ago I was wondering why we were getting so
many hits from the UK in one day.

Well we found the answer!  The London Based newspaper the Daily Telegraph
gave Rock-it Radio a #1 Rating for oldies on the internet in a article titled ...
59 Top Internet Radio Stations

London's Newspaper - Daily Telegraph gives Rock-it Radio the #1 Ranking for
Internet Oldies Stations!!!!!

The Article read ...

"THROWBACK

#1 Rock-It Radio

In this age of super-slick websites, it's nice to stumble upon one that
harks back to the early days of the network. Rock-It Radio, currently
celebrating its 19th year online, is just such a station. Playing nothing
but hip-shaking Fifties and early-Sixties rock and roll,
it's a welcome throwback if ever there was one."

You can read the entire article of the top 59 Internet stations at:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/10409420/The-best-internet-radio-stations.html

COME REMEMBER WOLFMAN JACK !!!
Rock-it Radio has a very special way to remember Wolfman Jack.  Arguably the most iconic of American DJ's.  Come check out the Rock-it Radio Wolfman Page at:

FINDING ROCK-IT RADIO ON THE 'TUNE IN RADIO' CELL PHONE APP.
We have had a few requests from listeners that they couldn't find us on the popular 'Tune in Radio' App. on Android and PC and iphones.  Running a search of 'Rock-it Radio' will actually list 100s of Rock stations.  So, the best way to find us on this very thorough and extensive app. that I love using myself is -
run a search on 'rockabilly' - there you will easily find
Rock-it Radio listed.
Our Tune in Radio App. webpage is also at:

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME EVICTS THE ASHES OF
ALAN FREED.

VIA ALLACCESS.COM

ALAN FREED's
ashes are in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME,
but the pioneering DJ who named the music is being evicted
by the Hall, his son LANCE FREED told the CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER.

FREED, who is picking up the ashes TODAY (8/4), told the paper
that the Hall's Pres./CEO GREG HARRIS told him, "people walk past
the exhibit and your dad's ashes and they scratch their heads and
can't figure out what this thing is, and we'd like you to come
pick up the ashes."  HARRIS told the PLAIN DEALER that only the
ashes are being removed, not other FREED artifacts, that the plan
was to return the ashes to the family all along, and that the
display where the ashes have been residing will include a pair of
FREED's microphones.

But LANCE FREED told the paper that the move is "pushing
(his father) to the side.  It's making him part of the passing parade,
rather than a place where people can say, 'hey this is the guy who
helped start it all.'"  He said that the family will locate a
CLEVELAND cemetery for the remains.

FREED's career exploded in the 1950s when he hosted at WJW-AM CLEVELAND;
after stints at WINS-A and WABC-A/NEW YORK, the payola scandal of 1959
ended his ascent, and he passed away at 43 in 1965.

Rock-it Radio Program Webpage Reminder

Remember, if the show that you want to hear is getting close to the bottom of the list of radio shows, you should tune in as soon as you can. These shows to have a high audio quality require a lot of internet bandwidth and memory. And currently we can only afford the 30 latest shows online here at Rock-it Radio.  So, when a new show is put online it knocks the oldest one off the Rock-it Radio archives page.  Usually a show will at least last 16 to 20 days, once it is placed in the archives.

Come Join the Rock-it Listener's Club

Want to join our Listeners Club?? And be notified when new shows are playing on the Rock-it. If you are not a member of our listeners club it is really easy to join... just go to our main website at: http://www.rockitradio.net
and click the button that reads... "click here to be on our mailing list" at the top of the page. When you click there leave your e mail address and you are in...it's free and it gives you the playlists and news on our latest shows.

============================================
OUR SISTER STATION FIRST NATIONS BROADCASTING.

We invite you to also check out our sister station -- First Nations
Broadcasting. And tune into the rather Cool North of the Yukon and Alaska with our very own Debbie Snowdove!

============================================
Well that is just about it for this newsletter and playlists of our latest
shows. We hope that you enjoy them.
We will do our best to keep these shows on for at least 14
days and hopefully 21 days.
All the best always,
Bennie Dingo
