MATT THE CAT & THE JUKE IN THE BACK WITH A FEATURE ON THE CARDINALS IN ROCK-IT RADIO #4352
The Cardinals
The Cardinals only scored 3 R&B hits, but all 3 made the top ten and are considered classics today. The group formed in Baltimore in late 1946 and came to the attention of Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson, co-founders of Atlantic Records in very early 1951. They were signed immediately and soon Atlantic sent their house arranger, Jesse Stone, down to Baltimore to work with the group and prep them for their first recording session, which was held in March, 1951. The Cardinals, who were known as the Mellotones at that time, were used to singing pop songs. Jesse Stone had to give them that R&B sound. Their first release, "Shouldn't I Know," climbed the R&B charts and put The Cardinals on the map. Their version of "The Wheel Of Fortune" in 1952 is considered the definitive R&B version of that song today as is their 1955 rendition of the Chuck Willis penned tune, "The Door Is Still Open." Lead tenor Ernie Warren has one of the most beautiful and distinguishable voices in all of early R&B and Matt The Cat brings The Cardinals' music and legacy to life on this week's "Juke In The Back."

============================================== AL 'COOL DADDY' SMITH WITH A FEATURE ON NAT KING COLE AND HIS INFLUENCE ON R&B AND ROCK ON SHOW #4360
This show is a tribute to a surprising Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Nat King Cole! As strange as this may seem to most folks, Nat and his drummerless trio had a huge impact on the development of the music genre we love. Most of this impact was felt from 1940-46 and many recordings from these years are featured as well as a few that are more illustrative of the style for which he is known. This is done for the sake of demonstrating the change in style that proved so successful for him during the Fifties and up until his death in 1965. His participation in what may have been the firsts Rock and Roll record (Blues Parts One and Two) is featured as well. Thanks to Lane Quigley for his help with assembling some of the music.
The play list is as follows:
1. Mr. Cole Wont Rock and Roll-Nat King Cole...1960 (9 minutes) 2. Straighten Up and Fly Right-Nat King Cole Trio 1943 3. (Get Your Kicks On ) Route 66-Nat King Cole Trio 1946 4. Call The Police-Nat King Cole 1941 5. Autumn Leaves-Nat King Cole 1956 6. Scotchin' With The Soda-Nat King Cole Trio 1941 7. Early Morning Blues-Nat King Cole Trio 1941 8. I Like To Riff-Nat King Cole Trio 1941 9. Sweet Lorraine-Nat King Cole Trio 1940 10. Vom, Vim, Veedle-Nat King Cole Trio 1942 11. Bring Another Drink-Nat King Cole Trio 1944 12. Hit That Jive Jack-Nat King Cole Trio 1941 13. That Ain't Right-Nat King Cole Trio 1941 14. Tenderly-Nat King Cole 1957 15. Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby-Nat King Cole Trio 1944 16. Send For Me-Nat King Cole 1957 17. Blues Part One (some) Blues Part Two(all)...1944(6 Minutes)
Thank you Al for this feature on Nat King Cole. His influence on Rock & Roll should not be overlooked. If you would like to write to Al with upcoming show ideas, comments, hello's etc. you can reach him at: cooldaddy@rockitradio.net

ROCK-IT RADIO LAUNCHING PAD PLEA FROM ROCK-IT RADIO.
Rock-it Radio is publicly supported and we rely on purchases from our Launching Pad for us to pay our bills from copyright to bandwidth. In October we had our 2nd worse month in sales and have run in the red with losses the last two months and November has gotten to a slow start as well. So many things are happening in the world from Hurricane Sandy victims to a difficult economy and so much more, I feel guilty in mentioning this. But if you have enjoyed Rock-it Radio this past year would you please consider helping us exist? We don't ask something for nothing. Every donation from the Rock-it Radio Launching pad you will receive a vintage Rock and Roll broadcast of your choice from the 50s thru the 70s and we have 100s to choose from. I know many of you save our shows on mp3 and we allow that and glad that you can do that. But we kindly ask for your support as well. These vintage shows also make great Holiday gifts to the oldies lovers in your family. Here are the links that help Rock-it Radio.
