MATT THE CAT AND THE JUKE IN THE BACK SHOW ON
ROCK-IT RADIO SHOW #6330 SPECIAL ON JIMMY PRESTON

Jimmy Preston made a major contribution to early Rock n' Roll by
ushering in the era of the screamin' sax. "Messin' With Preston,"
"Hucklebuck Daddy," "Hay Ride" and his other early sides for
Gotham Records were highly influential in the new genre of Rhythm & Blues,
but it's his original version of "Rock The Joint" that he will always
be remembered for. "Rock The Joint" from 1949 is a definite contender
for the first Rock n' Roll song, but since you can't pin an entire musical
movement down to just one tune, let's just say that it was one of the first.
It jumps, it wails, it swings and tells the story of how this music is
really going to make them rock the joint. It was immediately covered by
Chris Powell & The Five Blue Flames for Columbia, then Jimmy Cavallo,
but most importantly, Bill Haley laid down a ground-breaking rockabilly
version of "Rock The Joint" in 1952. So even though Jimmy Preston is
mostly remembered for one major contribution, Matt The Cat has dug up
many more noteworthy jump tunes to open your ears and tap your toe to.
This week's "Juke In The Back" is jumpin' with some pristine shellac from
the great and highly unappreciated Jimmy Preston. DIG!

1. Swanee River Boogie - Albert Ammons & His Rhythm Kings - Mercury 1947
2. Messin' With Preston - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1948
3. Chop Suey Louie - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1948
4. Hucklebuck Daddy - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1949
5. Sugar Baby - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1949
6. Hold Me Baby - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1949
7. Rock The Joint - Jimmy Preston & His Prstonians - Gotham 1949
8. Drinking Woman - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1949
9. Credit Blues - Jimmy Preston & His Prestonians - Gotham 1949
10. They Call Me The Champ - Jimmy Preston & His Orch - Gotham 1950
11. Hay Ride - Jimmy Preston & His Orch - Gotham 1950
12. Do The Bump - Jimmy Preston & His Orch - Gotham 1950
13. GREAT 78 - Let's Hang Out Tonight - Jimmy Preston & His Orch - Gotham 1950

As we are fighting to stay alive here on Rock-it

like what is a Aircheck?  Or Put up some sample.
So, we thought we would - We have put up the first
half of a XERB Wolfman Jack show from December 8,
1967.
To listen go to our Aircheck page in about the
middle of the page and find the link at:
http://www.rockitradio.net/aircheck.html

Our apologies for the first 13 seconds of dead air
on the recording but a special nostalgic treat to
Listen to the Wolfman.  I think you will enjoy

DINGO FAREWELL FROM STUDIO A IN POST FALLS, IDAHO

The last 24 hours have been difficult and have choked
up many times, as I hear back from the DJ's and there
very kind words of the best batch of oldies jocks ever
assembled by the way!  And a few nice comments from listeners
on the Rock-it Radio online facebook page.  It's a lot
harder to let go then I ever thought.  I guess after 23 almost
24 years it becomes a big part of you.  And if it wasn't for
the great jocks and Lane Quigley's help and all listener's
support over the years we never would of lasted this long.
I began Rock-it Radio as just myself .... My 'real' job
consisted of working parole and probation in California.
I had a supervisory capacity for 5 years when I was demoted,
took it pretty hard and a big loss in family income.
We were involved in a contract with the Federal Government
to house and help get jobs for Federal Inmates on the last 90
days of there sentence, mostly bank robbers and white collar
crimes.  I made the error of billing the Feds the first day
they arrived, I think we got like $48 a day per inmate.  I wasn't
supposed to do that.  The Inmates hated our facility... not as
luxurious as the Federal Penetentiaries or as good as food.
Which was a converted Air Force Barracks from 1946 to the late
60s at what was once the Camarillo Air Force Base in California.
I am getting side tracked here but to bring back in Australia as a
very young man in Queensland where I got the moniker Bennie Dingo
though I had at first a Yank accent that faded over time while I
was there.  Always being in Radio and Shortwave monitoring I knew a
friend and hit him up for a job .... and shocked IRRS in Milan Italy
at a NATO base would pick me up.  Then WRMI Radio Miami International
and a couple of other Shortwave outlets we would mail out our cassette
tapes in 1995 and 1996.  In 1997 we were also picked up by Palms Radio
in Corpus Christi Texas where we would do a weekend show over phone
lines.  And also over that new medium of the Internet.  The owner
of the Corpus Christi station thought that internet broadcasting was
not going to pan out and in my lap happily landed the use of and
it's own broadcasting station of Rock-it Radio.  Which at that time
was really the only station with our format.
And here we are many years later.  We always had our struggles financially
much to my overzealous attempts to get more listeners through advertising.
(That stuff is expensive you know it?!?)
Last October we started taking heavy losses in our account and that was
even without a advertising budget for 2018.  We started calling a SOS (Save
our Station).  Many loyal listeners came through from October until now,
many very generous purchases and donations.  And many of the Rock-it jocks
also, including myself.  But it slowed down and by December 18th I pretty
much realized even if we did last for December we didn't have the funds to
go into or commit to 2019.  I didn't want to make any announcement to the
DJ's until after Christmas as I know how hard they have worked and promoted
for the Rock-it.  So we waited until Boxing Day (yesterday the 26th).
Some things really brought it home while I was discovering what was missing
and not getting the numbers we used to back during 2008 to 2010 high water
mark years.
I went to my old facebook account by my real name that has some of our earliest
Rock-it Radio listeners....  70% + had passed on.
Competition is much more for listener demands, There are other stations out there
you might all enjoy including Top Shelf Oldies, Rockabilly Radio and Doo Wop Radio.
All competing for your listenership to a dwindling number of us still around.
We leave with just 95,000 people that have joined our listeners club over the years
and getting our newsletter.  But now only gets a 25% open rate.  Which corresponds
to the 70% have passed on.
I am now retired and if I had lots of money I would love to keep the
Rock-it going until my passing as well.  But being on a fixed income now
and disabled from the ailments from last few years.  I have to be responsible
and don't have the resources to pour into Rock-it.  Believe me I really hate
to let it go!  I love the DJ's & there shows, I love the listeners and I love
doing the encoding and newsletter and promotions!
One of the hardest phone calls I received was from a long time supporter and
listener Bill Cameron from N. Billerca, Mass.  when he told me he didn't know
what he would do without Rock-it and knowing already our days are numbered it
put the largest lump in my throat.  He has just about every show we have ever
done online.  But was in the hospital from June to September 2008 & missing
those shows.  Bill if you are out there buddy once things settle down here a
bit we will get those shows off to you!
There are so many people to thank and I don't want to leave anyone out.  So
many supporters.  All I can say is God Bless you for such a great run!  and
a big Thank you to you all the DJ's past and present, the listeners.
And if any of you are ever in Post Falls, Idaho please look me up!!!
Eventhough our Audio will shut down on 12/31/2018 the site will be open in
some pages like the main website and the DJ page and our history page.
Which I will write the final chapters of our last few years, was always
behind on that page.
I am also leaving our Ebay store and other sites like the Launching Pad
and Flash drive and T Shirt purchase sites to help pay for our bills that
will carry over into January.
And also in case there is a item that you wish to
have to finish off your musical collection.
God Bless Everyone,

Bennie Dingo
